PrEP – Prä-Expositions-Prophylaxe

PrEP is a medical protection against HIV. Reliably taken, the drug tenofovir / emtricitabine effectively protects from HIV, comparable to the protective effect of condoms. The PrEP can be taken regularly or temporarily. It is important that you keep to the pattern of intake and also have the regular accompanying examinations done.

PrEP will now be paid by German health insurances for people with an increased risk of HIV infection, too!

The according law came into force on 11 May 2019. Accordingly, the drug and the necessary accompanying medical examinations are paid by the health insurance companies.Since September 1st.2019 the public health service has an implementation agreement, which regulates the prescription and billing modalities for physicians and patients.

Accordingly, the PrEP can be prescribed for:

  • men who have intercourse with men (MSM) or transgender persons who report having had anal sex without a condom within the past 3 to 6 months and / or probably in the next few months or a recent STI (Sexual Infectious Infectious Disease) 12 months
  • serodiscordant constellations with a viremic HIV-positive partner without antiretroviral therapy (ART), a non-suppressive ART, or in the initial phase of ART (HIV RNA not less than 200 RNA copies / ml for 6 months)
  • after individual and situational risk assessment, drug-injecting individuals without the use of sterile injection materials
  • after individual and situational risk assessment, persons with intercourse without a condom with a partner who is likely to have undiagnosed HIV infection (eg one partner from high-prevalence countries or with high-risk sexual practices).
